I don’t do well with silence in any context. If I’m not wandering around with my headphones on, I at least need some kind of music going in the background. A lot of my friends say that to get anything done, especially creatively, they need it to be quiet so that they can focus. I’m just the opposite.
Whenever I sit down to write, the first thing I open up is my music player. What I play depends entirely on the scene I’m writing at that point, or on the book that I’m working on in general. I have a whole playlist for writing sex scenes, that, depending on the mood– hot and heavy, soft and sweet– runs the gamut from Cascada’s Pyromania to Def Leppard’s Pour Some Sugar On Me to Kelly Rowland’s Motivation and everything in between. Fight scenes call for anything with a strong enough beat or enough energy, like Anberlin’s Godspeed. I have a pseudo-horror novel I’m working on, too, and for that one I listen to creepy ‘lullaby’ versions of songs, or the Dead Space version of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star to get in the mindset. For me, the music helps fuel the creative process, inspires me to come up with new ideas.
Do like to work with music, or without? Personally I think my own writing would suffer if I had to do it in silence.
